If you have a leaking water heater, follow our emergency shut down instructions below or watch our video on how to turn off a leaking water heater.
Step 1: Turn Off the Power Supply
For an electric water heater, locate your circuit breaker panel and switch off the breaker labeled for the water heater. For a gas water heater, turn the gas valve to the “PILOT” setting to stop the burner without cutting gas entirely, or turn it to “OFF” if you smell gas.
Step 2: Shut Off the Cold Water Supply Valve
Find the cold water inlet pipe at the top of the tank. Turn the valve clockwise (righty-tighty) until it stops. This prevents more water from entering the tank and worsening the leak.
Step 3: Connect a Drain Hose (Optional)
If the leak is significant, attach a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank and run it to a floor drain or outside. This will reduce pressure and water damage while you wait for a technician.
When to Call a Professional
A leaking water heater is often a sign of a more serious issue. Common causes include a failing pressure relief valve, a corroded tank, or worn connections. According to the EPA’s Fix a Leak Week program, household water leaks waste nearly 10,000 gallons per year.
If your unit is over 8–10 years old, a leak often means it’s time for a replacement. Read our guide on how to know when it’s time to replace your water heater and learn about water heater safety risks you shouldn’t ignore.
